Gustavo Tavares, President of AMCHAMDR, delivered the welcoming remarks. He reaffirmed that addressing the electrical system must be approached from a comprehensive perspective, ensuring national competitiveness and business development.
Santo Domingo, February 24, 2016.- Rolando González-Bunster, President and CEO of Interenergy, was the speaker and guest of honor at the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic's February monthly luncheon, where he presented "Experiences and Solutions for the Dominican Electricity Sector." The luncheon, held at the Jaragua Hotel, welcomed keynote speakers from the country's energy sector.
Prior to speaker González-Bunster's presentation, Gustavo Tavares, President of AMCHAMDR, welcomed those present and emphasized: "We continue to believe that investments in the sector should focus on increasingly cheaper, more efficient, and environmentally friendly generation, on improving transmission networks, infrastructure, and management systems that reduce distribution and marketing losses to acceptable minimums, and on raising awareness in society about the rational use of electricity," he stated.
I continue to affirm that the Punta Catalina coal plants are continuing their progress, and recently we have received a status report on their development. Regardless of the steps taken by the Government with this project, we remain convinced that the State does not have all the necessary resources to take on the challenges of the sustained normalization of the national electricity system. Therefore, we believe that its investments must be concentrated on the most urgent areas that contribute most to the current and ongoing "bleeding" of the interconnected national electricity system, so that the private sector can contribute in other areas where it has demonstrated responsibility, efficiency, and commitment.
"As the American Chamber of Commerce, we fully support the President of the Republic in the recent and extremely important agreements he signed in Paris, France, to promote clean energy. This must be the path forward, especially given the positive multiplier effect that renewables bring to the country," he emphasized.
