As of January 20, 2021, Robert W. Thomas assumed the position of Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo. He had previously served as the mission's Minister Counselor since July 16, 2020, after serving three years as U.S. Consul General in Montreal, Canada.
A Foreign Service career officer, Mr. Thomas has also served overseas assignments in Mexico, Côte d'Ivoire, Canada (twice) and Mauritania. His national service includes multiple assignments in the Bureau of Consular Affairs and the Executive Secretariat of the Department of State. He was also deployed as part of the Department's crisis response team to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.
He completed his bachelor's degree in political science and comparative religious studies at Emory; Henry College, a small liberal arts college in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. He speaks French and Spanish.
