The Dominican Republic has implemented 87 percent of the 238 measures contemplated in the Trade Facilitation Agreement, promoted by the World Trade Organization. This means the country is on track to achieve its projected 2019 target of 90% adoption.
The information was provided by the Trade Facilitation Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) during the breakfast panel "Trade Trends, International Trade in Motion: Trends and Advances in the Dominican Republic."
During the event, the new concept of the Single Window for Foreign Trade (SWW 2020) was presented. Since its launch, it has streamlined the procedures required for the import and export of goods, as well as the contributions and benefits provided after its implementation.
Ramón Ortega, president of AMCHAMDR, believes that the adoption of these initiatives will allow Dominican businesses to streamline operations within the foreign trade logistics ecosystem and will have a direct impact on improving the country's competitiveness.
Since 2018, AMCHAMDR has assumed the secretariat of the National Trade Facilitation Committee (CNFC), an organization through which initiatives have been promoted to position the Dominican Republic as a logistics hub.
The CNFC was created by Presidential Decree 431-17 to facilitate internal coordination and implementation of the provisions of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, signed in 2013 at the Bali Ministerial Conference. The Dominican Republic ratified the agreement in February 2014.
During the "Amcham Trade Trends" Breakfast Panel, the scope and impact of the Trade Facilitation Agreement, signed in 2013 by members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), was discussed, with a view to bringing the public and private sectors together in these initiatives.
At the event, aimed at companies involved in foreign trade, progress was presented on the Single Window for Foreign Trade, the implementation of Electronic Seals, and the benefits of extended port hours.
