Gustavo Tavares, President of AMCHAMDR, delivered the welcoming remarks. He referred to legal security in the Dominican Republic, which is essential for the country's development.

Santo Domingo, July 20, 2016. Jake Kheel, Vice President of the Punta Cana Group Foundation, was the speaker and guest of honor at the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic's monthly luncheon for July. He delivered a presentation on the topic: "Dead by a Thousand Cuts: The Silent Collapse of Hispaniola's Forests." The luncheon, held in the Anacaona Room of the Jaragua Hotel, welcomed keynote speakers from the country's business sector.

Prior to the presentation by the Vice President of the Puntacana Group Foundation, Gustavo Tavares, President of AMCHAMDR, welcomed those present and emphasized: "When legislating, deputies and senators must bear in mind that their duty is to respect the law. Only in this way will they ensure that their legislative production and the effectiveness of the legislative branch are a credible reality. It is important that they realize this, especially in the run-up to the installation of the new Congress, when we have noticed intense legislative activity on highly sensitive issues for citizens in general and for all productive sectors of the country in particular. Our legislators must create a reliable and coherent system of laws, which will provide due legitimacy to the Legislative Branch, a pillar of Dominican democracy and guarantor of its sustainability," he indicated.

Tavares continued by saying that, as the new Congress approaches, the new authorities of the main branch of government, the Legislative Branch, must be aware that simply being elected is not enough to feel legitimized. In fact, their race toward legitimization will begin on August 16, when they begin their legislative work. "The hope of the Dominican people lies in their ability to create and reform laws with transparency, through dialogue, and by forging productive and respected consensus, so that, for example, the right to private property, an issue so fundamental to the market economy, becomes a bastion and not an obstacle to our development," he emphasized.

Jake Kheel, Vice President of the Puntacana Group Foundation, focused his speech on the sustainability of our environment and our commitment as citizens and residents of this country to protecting it. In his presentation, he highlighted the cinematographic work featured in the film "Dead by a Thousand Cuts."
