June 20, 2024

The American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) held its monthly luncheon for the month of June this Wednesday, where the guest speaker and guest of honor was Haydée Rainieri, member of the Board of Directors of Grupo Puntacana, who during her presentation, entitled “The Tourism Industry and Artificial Intelligence”, addressed the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence (AI) presents in the evolution of the Dominican tourism industry.

During his speech, Rainieri highlighted the resilience of the Dominican tourism sector and the constant willingness of tourists to visit the Dominican Republic, exploring more than just traditional or popular destinations. “Throughout time, events have shown that the tourism industry is highly resilient and that people are not willing to stop traveling. Therefore, we would dare to say that the Dominican Republic's economic future in the short and medium term will continue to be based on the tourism industry, provided we are able to adapt to the changes and needs of travelers, as well as to the challenges posed by digitalization and the threat of climate change,” he stated.

The hotel industry entrepreneur emphasized the need to update the tourism industry by implementing new digital developments at the government and private sector levels. She highlighted the impact of AI on the tourism industry, emphasizing that it is as relevant as it will be in many other sectors.

“According to Deloitte, the future of this industry will be shaped by the influence of AI. The WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) notes that the transformative power of AI applications in the sector marks a commitment to a digital future that offers unique experiences to travelers,” he added.

Rainieri explained how AI will redefine travel and tourism standards, improving the traveler experience through personalized recommendations, optimized pricing strategies, and instant responses via sophisticated chatbots. Furthermore, AI will enable predictions of demand patterns and provide crucial insights for governments and stakeholders, facilitating more efficient resource allocation.

“AI will redefine travel and tourism standards, enhancing the travel experience by enabling personalized recommendations, optimizing pricing strategies through real-price adjustments, and providing instant responses and tailored interactions through sophisticated chatbots,” Rainieri emphasized.

The businesswoman noted that the technological revolution is already impacting tourism, allowing users to find personalized travel ideas, reduce wait times in restaurants, minimize waste in hotels, optimize airport traffic, make predictions, and increase efficiency levels. She emphasized that the global tourism industry has embraced this transformation and that, in the Caribbean, the sector is preparing for the adoption of AI technology, as evidenced by the recent "Caribbean Tourism Artificial Intelligence Transformation Guide," launched by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association.

With a call to action, Rainieri emphasized that the tourism industry is at a turning point: it must advance and adapt to new demands, taking advantage of the tools that AI offers. He underscored the crucial role of companies in the implementation and development of AI in the country, and the need for public-private collaboration and investment in research and development (R&D). He expressed confidence that the Dominican tourism industry will meet new international demands in the short term, remaining the undisputed leader and preferred destination for millions of travelers.

On the other hand, Edwin De los Santos, president of AMCHAMDR, noted, "At AMCHAMDR, we recognize that artificial intelligence (AI) is a transformative tool for the Dominican Republic's tourism industry. The application of AI will not only further boost tourism in our country, but will also significantly improve the user experience. Technological innovations, such as personalized recommendations, optimized pricing strategies, and instant responses through sophisticated chatbots, will redefine the standards of travel and tourism. It is crucial that both the public and private sectors collaborate and invest in research and development to make the most of these opportunities. We are confident that, by adapting to these advances, the Dominican tourism industry will continue to be a leader and a preferred destination for millions of travelers."

This luncheon is made possible thanks to the support of the member companies of the AMCHAMDR Elite Circle: AES Dominicana, Barrick Pueblo Viejo, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana, Citi, HIT Puerto Río Haina, Grupo Humano, Inicia, Grupo Martí, Altice Dominicana, Grupo Rica, Grupo SID, Grupo Punta Cana, Grupo Estrella, and Squire Patton Boggs.
