In light of U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement this Wednesday of the imposition of a 10% tariff on the Dominican Republic, the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) noted that the reciprocal tariff policy announced by the U.S. government represents significant changes that will have direct and indirect impacts globally and bilaterally. Therefore, it is important to carefully assess the challenges and opportunities that these measures may entail.
AMCHAMDR emphasized that trade relations with the United States are the most important bilateral relationship for the Dominican Republic, representing 53.51% of total Dominican exports, with a value exceeding US$1% of US$4% by 2024.
It's worth noting that, while these measures may have a negative impact on demand in the United States due to higher prices, the Dominican Republic is among the countries with the lowest reciprocal tariffs (10%). Therefore, Dominican market share appears to have a smaller relative impact and could benefit compared to products from Asia, where significantly higher reciprocal tariffs have been applied.
AMCHAMDR is a binational chamber representing 1,600 companies responsible for 59% of Dominican exports. We have asked our Economy, Trade Facilitation, and Bilateral Relations committees to review the announced measures and provide a comprehensive assessment, which will be shared with our members and key government officials.
